This project was recently dropped by teammate of the SAVEMONEY militia, Towkio. If you are a fan of Vic Mensa or Chance the Rapper, then this is the mixtape for you!
Not only because they are featured on the project but because a high majority of the project sounds like a compilation of songs by both of them. From Towkio, we have carefree, inspirational songs, while there is also disco feel to the other half. However, i’m strictly speaking vibes; Towkio’s voice, although not as powerful, is distinct from Vic and Chance for the most part. This can be especially heard in the auto-tuned, feel-good track “Free Your Mind,” which takes a plethora of disco elements towards big band music.
Though these are the feelings most certainly carried throughout the project, Towkio hits us with surprisingly darker intro, outro, and interlude-worthy tracks as well. These carry a more eerie tune and tempo, which helps break the flowing romantic aura surrounding the tape, in a way that binds the disco with the remnants of hip-hop that it actually holds. But it definitely is still hip-hop; a jazzy, dance-type, r&b-hip-hop. We see stand-out tracks like God In Me which I would say is strictly rap, also featuring the up and-coming-duo, Leather Corduroys. Its a track that reminds me very much of Run the Jewels, and Towkio takes over a style resembling that of Vic Spencer.
Overall, the project is like a second breath of fresh air for hip-hop and is likely to stay on my phone for a couple months. I just wish the project were a couple tracks longer.
